About Yumenokessho POPY and ROSE
Development of POPY and ROSE was first teased in a surprise announcement from the Garupa Fan Festa Day 1 livestream. They were initially announced as CeVIO AI song voices for Toyama Kasumi and Minato Yukina, leading fans to believe that their products will actually be named after said characters, on top of having their voices provided by the characters’ voice actresses, Aimi and Aiba Aina, respectively.
It turns out that fans were only half right. The Bandori! Summer Major Presentation 2022 livestream revealed that while the new voice banks will indeed be based on Aimi and Aiba Aina’s voices, they’ve been given new names, POPY and ROSE, and brand new designs as well.
The new names are based on Kasumi and Yukina’s respective bands, Poppin’Party and Roselia.
The big reveal also unveiled a new name for the project itself: 夢ノ結唱 / Yumenokessho
Concerning the new project name, Yumenokessho, Bandori Project producer, Nemoto Yuki, explains that 夢/Yume (literally meaning “dream”) is taken from the “dream” part of “BanG Dream”, and 結唱/kessho** (literally meaning “crystallization”) represents how these CeVIO AI products are like the crystallization of all of Poppin’Party and Roselia’s experiences up to now. He also expressed hope that these voice banks can serve as an avenue for many fans and musicians to create brand new songs and music to make more dreams come true, another reason why the project is being called Yumenokessho.
**Note: the actual writing of “kessho” is 結晶, but the second kanji is replaced by 唱 which is read the same way, but means “singing” to represent that this is singing software
As for the new voice bank names, POPY and ROSE, Nemoto explains that they indeed originally considered simply naming them “Kasumi” and “Yukina” after the characters whom they are based on. But these are more than just character voices to them; these voice banks are being made from the very sounds that have come to define Poppin’Party and Roselia. Therefore, they decided to name the voice banks POPY and ROSE, short for their band names, so that they encompass not just single characters, but the entirety of their respective bands.
Designs
Characters designs for both POPY and ROSE were created by 米室 / Yonemuro.
For POPY’s design, they went for a sailor uniform-like outfit given how Poppin’Party is a high school girls band, along with a near-future twist in the form of electric circuit patterns on her cheeks given how POPY is representing AI technology. They also included both Kasumi’s signature orange character color and Poppin’Party’s pink band color for her clothes and accessories.
And in stark contrast to the always-smiling Kasumi, POPY’s face is kept expressionless so that her users can add their own expressions and interpretations to her, showing that her creators truly do understand vocal synth culture.
As for ROSE, they kept to the usual gothic look that Yukina is known for. Yukina’s character color is also used for the rings around her thighs, and the character colors for the other Roselia members are used for her hair highlights.
Story Contest (finished)
Something that POPY and ROSE’s creators didn’t provide for them were backstories. But there’s where fans could come in.
Immediately following their unveiling, a new collaboration story-writing contest with the fanfiction sharing service, monogatary.com began in which fans can write and upload their own stories about POPY and ROSE themed around “crystallization of a dream,” Yumenokessho.
What’s more, the winning entry in the contest will serve as the story for an original song to be written by kemu! The song will then in turn serve as the basis for a music video contest with Sakuga King GRAND-PRIX in which fans will compete to create MVs for it!
After collecting story entries from June 23rd through July 19th, the winning entry in the monogatary.com contest was finally announced in late September:
Winning story: 「Blooming Song」by 台形 / Daikei
Read it here: https://monogatary.com/story/399616
Commentary:
“POPY and ROSE restore a dream that they once gave up on. This is a story that expresses the world that the Yumenokessho project aims to create exceedingly well in a fresh and emotional way. We believe that the voices of these two newly created characters will reach all corners of the world, and entrust that dream to this story as it is made into song and video. Thank you very much for the wonderful story.”

Conclusion
Suffice to say, the creators of POPY and ROSE want them to hit the ground running, and are already doing more for their upcoming debut than other companies often do for their first vocal synth products! Through all the different contests, they will have a variety of fan-created content right from the outset.
The future looks very exciting for fans of CeVIO, fans of BanG Dream!, and fans of vocal synth music in general. The creation of voice banks based off established characters is a rare practice, and the existence of POPY and ROSE may pave the way for similar voice bank releases for other characters in the project, or possibly even characters from other properties. We never known which company could be starting the next big trend in the vocal synth world, and we could be staring at the next big thing at any given moment without knowing it.
Stay tuned for more updates on POPY and ROSE as they come to light!
