Project Message Vol. 5
With the release of Project SEKAI Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku now just 4 days away, the development team surprises us with another pre-release Project Message! Find the message here, and read on for an unofficial translation of what they have to share about the addition of songs after the game is released!
Hello. Project SEKAI dev team, here.
There are now just a few more days until release.
We can’t wait until everyone can get their hands on Project SEKAI and meet all 26 characters in the game.
For this Project Message, we’ll be talking about the pace at which new songs – the most important element to a rhythm game – will be added. We’ll also be talking about something that players may have been wondering: “How many of the songs will have 3DMVs?”
How many songs should be added per month, and what’s a good ratio of 3DMVs for them?
When we started this project, one of the biggest issues we confronted was determining how many songs we would release each month. On the one hand, the VOCALOID scene has more than 10 years worth of history behind it, and even if we just take out a small portion of songs from that history, it would take too long to add them to the game little by little.
On the other hand, it’s also true that there’s a limit to the amount of 3DMVs that we can consistently create while maintaining a certain level of quality.
Specifically speaking, the amount of 3DMVs that we can presently create per month is 2. We want to deliver more content to players as quickly as possible, but creating even one 3DMV is a complex process that requires a lot of time and work from the staff; 2 is the max number that we can realistically create per month under present conditions.
And within those circumstances, we also needed to decide whether we want to add only songs with 3DMVs at the pace that we can create them, or if we want to add songs with a mix of 3DMVs and 2D backdrops so that fans can enjoy them more quickly. In the end, considering how the VOCALOID scene has a lengthy history behind it, and how we want to fulfill the wishes of fans who ask that their favorite VOCALOID song be added as quickly as we can, we decided to go with the latter.
At present, we plan to consistently add about 4 or 5 songs per month. Among those, an average of 1 to 2 will be original songs made by our song creators for each unit in the game, and the remaining 2 to 4 will be existing songs that fans appear to be listening to a lot on YouTube and Niconico Douga.
We believe that this 4 to 5 songs per month pace is the best balance of pushing out the maximum amount of songs while making sure not to cross the line that would make the pace too overwhelming.
Our plan for other song additions
On the flipside, when thinking about the storied history and abundance of songs in the VOCALOID scene, it’s possible that this pace won’t be enough to satisfy a growing player base.
Therefore, on top of the regular monthly song additions, we’re also considering adding more of them through campaigns. For example, there’s the 20 straight day song addition campaign that we just announced today (September 25) and rushed to implement to celebrate the game’s impending release. (We don’t think we’ll be holding any more campaigns that add this many songs at one time, but you never know!)
Campaigns like these are special occasions like New Year’s when fans can make a lot of time for enjoying games, and we would like to hold them when something is being celebrated.
Furthermore, because Project SEKAI is a game that was developed in tandem with the VOCALOID scene, we would very much like to routinely add songs written by even more creators, especially those by small-time creators.
On that topic, we’re planning to make an announcement in the coming days, so look forward to that.
Conclusion
So what do you think?
We hope that some of our own “feelings” about the addition of songs – the core element of rhythm games – came through in this Project Message.
If you have any opinions or requests regarding this Project Message that you would like to share, please feel free to email our support team.
And with that, it’s not long now before release! We look forward to your continued support of Project SEKAI!
