Project SEKAI Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku Derivative Works Guidelines

If you’re a budding creator and have fallen in love with the characters of Project SEKAI Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku, then you’ll probably want to not just play the game but also draw illustrations and manga, create figures, animate videos, design cosplay outfits, and maybe even produce fan-created merchandise for them!
But wait! The creators of the game have some important guidelines that you need to be aware of before you start creating what’s called “derivative works” (fan-created media and merchandise for officially licensed characters) for the Project SEKAI crew.
The guidelines can be found in Japanese here. Continue reading the rest of this article for an unofficial translation of the whole thing!
Thank you to all readers for your support of Project SEKAI Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku (hereafter “Project SEKAI”).
In order for more people to discover and learn about the game, SEGA Corporation, Colorful Palette / Craft Egg, Inc., and Crypton Future Media, Inc. have established a set of guidelines regarding the creation of derivative works for Project SEKAI.
Please have fun creating fan works while following the below rules.
These guidelines also overlap with the terms of use for the Project SEKAI Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku app (please check them after the game’s release). Furthermore, when creating fan works with piapro characters from Crypton Future Media, Inc., their character usage guidelines are to take priority over our guidelines.
Acceptable Derivative Works Using Project SEKAI Content
- Drawing, display and distribution of illustrations, dojinshi, manga, novels, etc.
- Creation and distribution of figures and other 3D objects
- Creation and distribution of cosplay outfits (for any age)
- Character cosplaying, and public display and distribution of cosplay photos or videos
- Introducing game content through videos and screenshots of normal gameplay
※When displaying, selling or photographing fan works at an event, please make sure to follow the rules of the hosting companies (including SEGA Corporation, Colorful Palette / Craft Egg, Inc., and Crypton Future Media, Inc.)
Conditions for Acceptable Derivative Works
Individuals and unincorporated entities may freely create, display and distribute any derivative work (dojinshi, fan-created merchandise, etc.) themed around Project SEKAI if they fall under the below definition of “non-commercial purposes.”
If you are a business or an incorporated entity looking to create derivative works that are based on Project SEKAI, or that go beyond our evaluation criteria, please consult with us using our contact information beforehand.
How We Define “Non-commercial Purposes”
We define “non-commercial purposes” as individuals or unincorporated entities creating derivatives works without the intention of profiting from them.
Furthermore, receiving equivalent compensation for production expenses – such as raw material cost or tool usage – incurred for hobby use also falls within the scope of “non-commercial purposes.”
Regarding Fan Works Based on the piapro Characters
For creators hoping to produce fan works using characters whom Crypton Future Media, Inc. holds the rights to, concrete examples of what is acceptable and unacceptable are provided.
・About the piapro Character License
Within the character usage guidelines, the piapro Character License (hereafter “PCL”) was also established so that creators could produce fan works of the piapro characters (MEIKO, KAITO, Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, and Megurine Luka) and post them online.

When posting fan works for Project SEKAI that include the piapro characters, please make sure to look over their character usage guidelines and PCL.
・About piapro Link
piapro Link is a web service that fans who are not seeking any profit can use to apply to Crypton Future Media, Inc. for authorized use of derivatives works with the piapro characters while receiving equivalent compensation for production costs (non-commercial, but costing money).
When using the piapro characters in Project SEKAI fan works, please use piapro Link if there will be transactions involving exchange of money with an unspecified party (transactions with a specified party do not apply).
Because there are many cases in which dojin circles are distributing products on a small scale while receiving compensation for production costs, we make it easy to apply for this type of hobby use of fan works, so applicants need not look too deeply into it or do anything requiring more work than necessary. Find the links below for more about piapro Link.

Furthermore, if you wish to create fan works that include non-Project SEKAI characters, please consult with the respective rights holders of those characters. piapro Link does not accept applications for use of such characters.
Regarding Use of Game Content on Social Media and Video Sharing Sites

・Broadcasted works for Project SEKAI (anime, live performance, event talk session, livestream programs, etc.)
・Uploading content that falsely implies official cooperation, sponsorship, recognition or acknowledgment from the Project SEKAI staff, or otherwise mislead people
・Anything that violates the terms of use established by the social media or video sharing platform
